South Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey has urged residents in the Lower Ormeau area to support a vigil organised by the local community for this Thursday 8th January at 6:30pm (to take place on the Ormeau Road, at the top of Rutland Street and Farnham Street) to show solidarity with those residents who have been victims of crime and to send a clear message to these local thugs that the community will not tolerate their criminal behaviour.
The vigil was organised after an upsurge in anti-social behaviour in the area over the Christmas and New Year period. Read full article

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey and East Belfast representative Niall Ó Donnghaile have welcomed the announcement by the PSNI that they are to create neighbourhood policing teams within the South and East Belfast areas, and have said that they will be seeking a meeting with the PSNI in order to help them to identify their priorities and to develop a strategy of engagement with the local community. Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Vincent Parker has called for better labelling on household products to inform the public what products can be recycled. With the huge amount of waste that will be created over the Christmas and New Year period we need to be doing more to encourage people to recycle more of their household waste. Read full article

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed the reduction of prescription charges from £6.85 to £3 from Thursday (1st January) by the Health Minister Michael McGimpsey. This move comes ahead of the abolition of prescription charges in the North of Ireland by 2010. Read full article

Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Vincent Parker has complimented the ongoing work of the Finaghy Crossroads Group and said that tonight's official opening of their new office ensures that the good work will continue in the future.
Mr Parker was speaking in advance of tonight's official opening of the Group's new premises at No. 3 Finaghy Road North, and the official switch on of the areas Christmas lights.

East Belfast Sinn Féin Representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed a commitment given by the Department of Social Development Minister, Margaret Ritchie, that she is fully committed to securing 20% of the residential development on the former Sirocco Works site for developing Social and Affordable Housing.

Alex Maskey made the pledge of continued support after a special meeting of Belfast City Council's Parks and Leisure Committee reaffirmed its support for a report stating that Ormeau Park was the preferred site for a new multi-purpose stadium.
