South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has described a meeting which took place on Friday with Queens University Vice-Chancellor Peter Gregson and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Gerry McCormac as extremely useful. The meeting was held to discuss a number of issues including the need for managed student accommodation, parking issues, problems associated with the behaviour of some students in the Holyland area, and the need for the University to build on its current relationship with residents who live in the vicinity of the University.

Alex Maskey MLA said,

"On Friday I met with Queens University Vice-Chancellor Peter Gregson and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Gerry McCormac. The meeting dealt with a wide range of issues including issues such as the need for managed student accommodation, parking issues, problems associated with some students in the Holyland area, and the need for the University to build upon its current relationship with residents living in the vicinity of the University.

"The meeting was extremely useful, and Queens University must be commended for the work which they have been doing in these fields thus far. However, there is much more work to be done and it is essential that residents living in the vicinity of the University have an input and are consulted at all stages".

He concluded,

"I believe that there are a number of imaginative steps which could be taken to deal with the issues I have outlined above. I was pleased with the response of the University representatives during this morning's meeting and I would expect that we will build upon this meeting in conjunction with local residents groups".
