Maskey hits out at DUP stalling after cancellation of meeting

Published: 4 November, 2008

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has accused elements within the DUP of continuing to try and stall political progress here after the DUP cancelled today's planned meeting of the Assembly and Executive Review Committee.

The South Belfast MLA said,

"The Assembly and Executive Review Committee (AERC) process was put in place to try and resolve issues around Policing and Justice.

"There is a considerable amount of work for the AERC to be getting on with. Sinn Féin were quite prepared to attend today's meeting and clarify or discuss any issue with the other committee members. For these reasons we firmly believe that today's meeting of the committee should have gone ahead".

Mr Maskey concluded,

"The decision to cancel today's meeting is a political one, taken by the DUP. it is further evidence of stalling from the party instead of moving ahead with the serious business of delivering on obligations flowing from the St. Andrews Agreement". CRÍOCH
