Increase in burglaries in Lower Ormeau and University areas

Published: 1 December, 2008

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has called on people with information on the recent spate of burglaries in the University and Lower Ormeau areas to bring this information forward to the PSNI.

The South Belfast MLA said,

"There has been a number of burglaries in recent weeks in the Lower Ormeau and University areas. The latest that I am aware of saw students having their laptops stolen.

"Such burglaries have not been solely targeted at students, with a number of break-ins and attempted break-ins also taking place at the homes of long-term residents.

"I would urge everyone to ensure that they keep in mind simple precautions which may deter burglars; simple steps such as not leaving valuable items in the open can make all the difference. I would also hope that the fact that 'alley-gating' has been given the green light in the Lower Ormeau area will, when installed, help reduce the number of break-ins".

He concluded,

"While simple precautions and schemes such as 'alley-gating' may act as deterrents, it is essential that those who are carrying out these acts are caught to ensure that they are not able to continue their criminal acts. I would therefore call on anyone who has any information about who may be responsible for these burglaries to bring this information forward to the PSNI".
