Assembly unanimously passes Sinn Féin Gaza motion

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that the unanimous passing of a Sinn Féin motion calling for the resolution to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, based on human rights, adds local representatives voices to the international chorus on this issue.

The South Belfast MLA said,

"Sinn Féin, alongside other parties, welcome the recent ceasefire in Gaza. The Sinn Féin motion, along with a UUP amendment, were both carried in recognition that this crisis carries weight above any local political differences.

"It is clear to all that the Israeli invasion of Gaza triggered a massive humanitarian crisis and that the loss of civilian life has been devastating. All of the parties in the Assembly have joined with Sinn Féin to add our voices, very clearly, to the international calls for a resolution to this crisis.

"To add a resolute and unified call in the Assembly furthers the pressure for key actors both in Palestine and Israel, but also those with influence in the International community to push for a negotiated settlement.

"What we must see now is this opportunity being utilised to help rebuild both Gaza in terms of housing, schools, health care and civil society along with rebuilding the chances for peace. No time should be wasted in pressing for a lasting peace process based on direct dialogue, political negotiation and respect for human rights."
