Maskey hits out at attacks on Polish homes

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that a small minority of mindless thugs cannot be allowed to exploit yesterday's trouble in relation to the Northern Ireland and Poland match to further their narrow racist agenda.

The South Belfast MLA was speaking after a number of homes occupied by Polish nationals were attacked.

Alex Maskey MLA said,

"For some time now there has been a minority of mindless thugs intent on carrying out racist attacks in this area. They have nothing to offer the community in South Belfast and the vast majority of the people here reject their actions.

"The violence connected with yesterday's soccer match was reprehensible.

"It is extremely worrying that, in the wake of this violence, a number of homes occupied by members of the Polish community have been attacked.

"Such attacks are being carried out by mindless thugs who are attempting to exploit yesterday's violence for their own narrow racist agenda. They cannot be allowed to succeed in this".
