South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has called upon people in South Belfast to be on their guard following an incident involving a bogus caller in Hatfield Street.
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon when the bogus caller, claiming to be from Belfast City Council, called to the home of a pensioner in Hatfield Street and tried to gain entry to the house. Fortunately, the man fled when asked for identification.
Alex Maskey MLA said,
"Yesterday afternoon a bogus caller, claiming to be from Belfast City Council called and tried to gain entry to the home of a pensioner on Hatfield Street. Fortunately, in this case the householder challenged the caller to produce identification to prove that he was from the Council. The caller, unable to produce such identification then left the scene.
"This incident highlights the need for people to be on their guard. I would urge people in South Belfast to take care when dealing with callers to their home. There are a number of steps that the people can take to ensure the callers are genuine. If people are in doubt they should request to see identification, furthermore they can secure the door with a chain before answering the door alternatively if the caller is genuine they will be able to provide a phone number for the person to call to make sure they are genuine.
"It must be stressed that genuine callers will not mind being asked to produce identification, indeed, most would expect to be asked to produce identification before gaining entry to someone's home".
