Sinn Féin reps home attacked after interface violence

Published: 1 September, 2009

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile, speaking after his family home was attacked by anti-social elements tonight, has hit out at those involved in tonight's interface violence in East Belfast and has said that the use of plastic bullets by the PSNI was completely unjustified.

Niall Ó Donnaghile said,

"Tonight the window of my mother's home was smashed. This act was carried out by anti-social elements from within the Short Strand community.

"These are the same anti-social elements who were involved in tonight's interface trouble, and the interface trouble which has been ongoing for the past number of weeks. Those involved in such activity are serving no purpose other than attacking the Short Strand community."

"So far tonight, I am aware that at least four plastic bullets have been fired in relation to interface trouble in the East Belfast area. This is completely unacceptable and uncalled for. Interface trouble has been ongoing in this area over the past number of weeks and has been flagged up by community workers and statutory bodies from both sides of the community. The PSNI would have been made well aware of this these problems and, in my opinion, have failed to deal with the situation adequately, the use of plastic bullets was completely uncalled for and unjustifiable."
