They were speaking in advance of a number of public consultation events that have been organised by the South Belfast District Policing Partnership in the coming weeks.
Alex Maskey MLA said, "Policing our communities is an issue that involves everyone in society so it is only fair that the community have an input into developing the policing plan for the future.
"The South Belfast District Policing partnership is hosting a number of consultation events in the coming weeks and it is important that the people of South Belfast attend these meetings and have an input into the way policing is carried out in South Belfast.
"These meetings are a perfect opportunity to directly tell police commanders and planners what priorities people want out of policing in their community. I would therefore encourage the people of South Belfast to attend one of these meetings and make their views and opinions known.
Appealing to South Belfast residents to attend one of the meetings, Balmoral Sinn Féin representative, and Independent DPP member, Vincent Parker said people need to get involved in shaping the policing of South Belfast,
"The PSNI in South Belfast is charged each year with producing a Local Policing Plan for the area. This plan sets out the proposed arrangements for the policing of the area, with identified policing priorities, which have been determined in conjunction with the District Policing Partnership
"These public consultation meetings are all about getting people involved in the shaping of their own policing and we want to help them understand the processes and how exactly they are affected by them.
"I would urge all members of the public to participate in the consultation event to ensure that they avail of this opportunity to help shape and influence how the South Belfast area is policed and to help identify what they believe should be the priorities for the PSNI in the area." CRÍOCH
