Political leadership must be shown on flags issue in South Belfast
Published: 1 September, 2010
South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey and representative Vincent Parker have called upon unionist and loyalist politicians and community leaders to show political leadership and ensure that flags which were erected over the summer period are removed.
Alex Maskey MLA said,
"If unionist and loyalist politicians and community leaders in South Belfast are truly intent on portraying the area in a positive image, then they must show political leadership and face up to the challenge of the flags issue".
Balmoral Sinn Féin Representative Vincent Parker said,
"The annual erecting of these flags is divisive and sets back community relations in the South Belfast area.
"South Belfast residents that have contacted our constituency office are sick and tired of the flags being erected every year, many of them likening it to dogs marking their territory. It is time for this to end and I would call upon loyalist and unionist politicians and community leaders to ensure that these flags are removed".
