Maskey shares hostel plan concerns

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that he shares the concerns of local residents and traders in the Lower Ormeau and Holyland areas in relation to plans to change the use of a premises at 165/169 Ormeau Road to a hostel.
Alex was speaking after formally objecting to the planning application for the change of use of this site.
Alex Maskey MLA said,
"I have recently spoken to a number of residents and traders around this locality and they have raised serious concerns about this application.
"The site which is proposed for this hostel lies within the Holyland / Lower Ormeau areas. It is my firm belief that this area is already grossly overpopulated with serious damage having been caused to both infrastructure and community cohesion.
"I would be concerned that this hostel could, in future, be used as temporary accommodation for vulnerable people as a number of this type of accommodation already exist in the immediate area.
"I further believe that should this application be granted permission it would send a negative message to any attempts to rejuvenate and develop the area. I have, therefore, lodged a formal objecting to this planning application".
