South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that if areas in South Belfast are to be truly regarded as 'mixed' areas then unionists need to show political leadership and face up to the sectarian intimidation that is ongoing in the area. New research published independently by Millward Brown Ulster revealed that 80% of the people surveyed would like to see their MP, MLA or local councillor support Integrated Education in the North.

Commenting on speculation that the two governments are planning fresh political talks outside Ireland in early October Sinn Féin Assembly member Alex Maskey today said that the governments needed to focus their attention on the only remaining blockage to restored institutions, the failure of the DUP to embrace power sharing. South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has voiced concern about the exploitation of migrant workers after it was revealed that of 86 Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs) inspected by the Housing Executive in Belfast between Jan and August 2003, 73 required Article 80 notices requiring the landlord to upgrade the dwelling to the correct standard, and demanded more resources to ensure the immediate registration of all HMOs. East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó'Donnghaile today welcomed the move by the Electoral Office to remove the annual registration requirement and move to a ten year system. However he expressed some concerns that the new register is being compiled from a blank sheet and is not using the current register as a starting point. Read full article

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó'Donnghaile has called upon the Housing Executive and the Department for Social Development (DSD) to act on the findings of a study carried out by 'St Matthew's Housing Association'. The study, commissioned by the Housing Association, and launched earlier in the year, show that the official housing waiting lists for the area do not accurately reflect the housing need. Sinn Féin had lobbied for the land to be designated for social housing and had also argued that any developments on the land needed to be sensitive to the needs of an interface area. South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has demanded to know why, almost nine months since homes where flooded on the Lower Ormeau Road, residents are still waiting for repairs to be carried out to their homes and to date nobody has been held responsible for the flooding and no pre-emptive measures have been put in place to ensure that this never happens again. Cllr. Maskey was speaking after figures from a survey carried out by Party activists highlighted a number of failures and inadequacies in the Government's reaction to the flooding and its aftermath.
