Laganbank Sinn Féin councillor and South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey has said that he is confident that he will receive cross-party support for his motion, to be discussed in Belfast City Council on the 3rd of January, calling for "the Eastern Health and Social Services Council and the Belfast Education and Library Board to take all the necessary steps - including the undertaking of meaningful discussions with the Trades Unions and all other affected parties - to ensure the protection of service standards in Health and Education in Belfast".
Cllr. Maskey MLA is moving this motion because of concerns highlighted by staff and Unions that PFI schemes will see the privatisation of front-line staff, and in the longer term, impact on front line service provision. Read full article

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has hit out at those involved in a racist attack on a Ugandan man on Christmas Eve in the Lower Ormeau area.
The man was struck in the face and attacked by a dog during an assault at his home. Read full article

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey and East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile have revealed that they have written to the Chief Executive of Castlereagh Borough Council requesting a meeting to discuss the recent CAJ report (Equality in Northern Ireland: the rhetoric and the reality).
The report has highlighted Castlereagh Borough Council as having the second worst employment record for Catholics in the North; with Catholic under representation on in the council workforce standing at over 35%. Read full article

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey yesterday led a party delegation to meet with British Direct Rule Minister David Hanson to discuss the Review of Public Administration (RPA).
The South Belfast MLA, accompanied by Foyle MLA Mitchel McLaughlin, used the meeting to call upon the British Government to move ahead with the RPA and also to reaffirm our position that the equality agenda must be at the heart of the Review. Read full article

The South Belfast MLA said that a Bill of Rights is a key demand of the Good Friday Agreement and that Sinn Féin had been pressing for the convening of this meeting in recent negotiations with the British government. Senior Sinn Féin Assembly member Alex Maskey today addressed a meeting of the party's National Elected Representatives Forum in Dublin. The group comprises Sinn Féin elected representatives at all levels from across the island. As part of a wide ranging address Mr Maskey accused the SDLP of becoming obsessed by a numbers game in relation to plans for future local government in the six counties and of taking their eye of the real battle which is to ensure that equality provisions are at the heart of any new arrangements.
