South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that the only way to truly deal with the rates issue in the North is to replace the current rating system with an income based approach to taxation which would be based on ability to pay and has called upon Department of Finance and Personnel Minister Designate, Peter Robinson, to make a review of the current rating system a priority for his department. East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has criticised the Post Office's decision to refuse the installation of Post box facilities which would be accessible to the people of the Short Strand. Mr Ó Donnghaile has also said that he will be appealing the decision and will be taking the case to both Postcomm and Postwatch which act as a watchdog and regulator for the postal service. Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Stiofan Long has said the British Government should deliver on its 2.5% pay rise for nurses immediately rather than it being done in stages. Mr Long went on to say that the pay increase still falls short of level of pay nurses should receive. Read full article

Commenting on the announcement of the make-up of the Strategic Review of Parades Body, Sinn Féin Assembly member for South Belfast Alex Maskey said that he had reservations about the appointment of Paddy Ashdown as Chairperson given his military and political involvement in Ireland in the past but that Sinn Féin would engage with any group who were prepared to press forward on the basis of local dialogue and accommodation to resolve contentious parades. Sinn Féin Assembly member for South Belfast Alex Maskey has added his voice to calls made by families of those killed by the UDA in the area for the Police Ombudsman to carry out an investigation into the activities of Special Branch Agent 'Inch' McFerron who was a leading UDA figure in the area for many years and is linked to many murders. Mr Long made the call after a recent survey carried out for the Department for Education and Skills (DFES) found that 40% of 16-21 year olds did not know what APR stood for and the basic aspects of money and finance are still baffling to many young people.
