Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Vincent Parker has welcomed calls from the Consumer Council which says that an urgent review of the Winter Fuel Payment is needed to ensure it adequately targets consumers in fuel poverty. The comments come amid claims that the qualifying age for the payment will rise to 66 and that the amount may be cut for some consumers. Read full article

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed the news that the tender for the 'Strategic Study of the Holyland and wider University Area' has been awarded by Belfast City Council.
Alex Maskey said that the awarding of this tender would see the services of professional consultants engaged to develop proposals for a long-term comprehensive strategic plan for the Holyland and wider university area. Read full article

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey, speaking as a new academic year approaches, has appealed to students new to the South Belfast area to play a pro-active role within their communities and to treat their new neighbours 'with the same respect that they would grant their neighbours at home'.
He added that the Universities have a role to play in this and also called on the parents of students take an interest in what their children are doing while they are in Belfast. Read full article

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that the fact that greater fiscal powers and powers in relation to the benefits system have not been transferred to the Assembly means that the well-being of the people here in the North lies in the hands of British Ministers who do not have their best interests at heart.
Alex Maskey was speaking after a report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation found that the poorest people cannot even achieve what most people regard as the minmum standard of living. Read full article
