Maskey welcomes committment to deal with dangerous building

Published: 5 December, 2005

South Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed a commitment from Belfast City Council that enforcement action will be taken against the owner of the derelict building formally known as 'Farrell's Bar' on Belfast's Lower Ormeau Road saying "I look forward to speedy action being taken to remove this unsightly premises from the Ormeau Road and to help improve the general environment in the area".

Cllr. Maskey MLA said,

" The derelict building formally known as 'Farrell's Bar' has been considered a danger to the local community for a number of years now. Despite the concern of the community the owner has so far only erected a wooden hoarding around the ground floor of the building, and this only occurred after threatened action by Belfast City Council.

" The building remains an unsightly and dangerous blemish on the Ormeau Road. This will become more obvious as the Council prepares to make improvements along the Ormeau Road as part of the Arterial Routes Programme. A minimum of £100,000 will be spent as part of the programme and it is not acceptable that the owner of 'Farrell's Bar' site continues to leave the site in such an unsightly and perhaps dangerous condition.

The South Belfast MLA concluded,

" I have been given a commitment by Belfast City Council that enforcement action will be taken against the property owner to ensure that this matter will be dealt with as a matter of urgency. Notices are currently being served on the property owner and I am confident that action will at last be taken to address this matter. I look forward to speedy action being taken to remove this building from the Ormeau Road and to help improve the general environment in the area. The local community and those who invest in the area are entitled to no less".
