South and East Belfast Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

GOOGLE IS NO DOODLE FOR IRISH

Published: 1 April, 2006

South Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey has expressed his disappointment at the web company 'Google' after schools in the Six Counties received invitations to enter a competition run by Google by drawing a picture of what it means to be British to them.

Cllr Maskey MLA said

" I have been contacted by staff at a number of schools who were not happy about this competition. The reality here is that many children, and families, do not regard themselves as British, a right enshrined in the Good Friday Agreement. Indeed, for many families the whole experience of 'Britishness' has been one of violence and pain.

" I am, therefore, disappointed that Google, who in one sense are progressive on the Irish language, offering their search engine in Irish, have been insensitive to the feelings of many people here".
