LOWER LISBURN ROAD SHOULD NOT BE LEFT OUT OF PARKING SCHEMES

Published: 3 April, 2006

South Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey has called for communities throughout South Belfast to be consulted about the proposed Residents Only Parking Schemes. The call comes after a number of residents and community groups in the Lower Lisburn Road area expressed a fear that they would be left out of the scheme.

South Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey said,

" I have been contacted by residents living on either side of the Lower Lisburn Road who are concerned that their area will not be included in the proposed Residents Only Parking schemes as the Lisburn Road area is not currently considered by the Roads Service or Belfast City Council as an area with parking problems.

" I am in agreement with residents in the area that this area does indeed suffer, not only from 9 to 5 commuter parking, but also from 24 hour parking problems caused by the large number of restaurants and bars in the area. Added to this, then, is the parking problems caused by the overpopulation of the area because of the large number of HMO's in the area.

" I have recently attended a meeting in Belfast City Council regarding the new 'parking legislation' and 'residents only parking schemes'. It is my hope that further discussions will be held throughout the constituency to determine the scope and nature of the Parking Schemes and I would hope that this would provide residents with an opportunity to lobby for appropriate action in their respective areas. It is my intention to work to ensure that this is the case". ENDS
