Sinn Féin Oppose Destruction of Oughley Hill

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has voiced his support for campaigners determined to oppose the destruction of Oughley Hill as a result of extending quarrying in the area.


Alex Maskey MLA said,

" The current application to extend the quarrying site would, I believe, mean extending quarrying at this site for a further 15 years at least.


" Many people in this area are deeply concerned that if the application is given the go ahead the result will be the destruction of an area of rich cultural and historical heritage in an area of natural habitat for many endangered and rare wildlife species.


" In essence, what we have here is a large multi-national company putting profit before the good of the area. I fully support the campaigners in this issue and would hope that the Planners would not be complicit in destroying this area of outstanding beauty and history".
