Tackling Climate Change

Published: 14 May, 2007

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed the news that Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún will be working with the new Temporary Committee on climate Change established by the European Parliament.

Ms de Brún is to be a substitute member of this committee.

Mr Ó Donnghaile said,

"I very much welcome the news that Bairbre de Brún MEP will be working with the new Temporary Committee on climate Change established by the European Parliament"

"Setting more ambitious targets will require major changes to our transport systems and to the manufacturing process; a commitment to alter the way in which energy is generated and a change to our collective lifestyles.

"Many of the suggestions for creating a more environmentally friendly society are obvious. We need to invest in public transport systems that use clean fuel, to invest properly in actively promoting renewable energy and to move away from excessive consumption and towards a more sustainable development.

"The discussions regarding climate change must be matched with actions, ambitious targets and permanent monitoring systems. The EU has a vital role to play."
