Sinn Féin to press ahead with Assembly Women's Working Group

Published: 23 May, 2007

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that Sinn Féin will press ahead with the setting up of an Assembly All Party Women's Working Group.

Mr Maskey said,

"The Assembly has now debated the issue of the under representation of women and despite the equivocation of some of the unionist parties, who coincidentally have the most severe problem in this, Sinn Féin believe's that there is enough momentum to press ahead with the setting up of an Assembly Women's All Party Working Group.

"In fact I think that outside of the Assembly there would be widespread support for a working group that could look not just the under representation of women in political life but also issues such as domestic violence, pay inequality, barriers to education, training and employment and the very substantial role that women play in our society as carers.

"I believe that we could find all party consensus on setting up a Women's working group to promote the role of women in our society; to influence the development of public policy to facilitate greater equality; and to work with political parties, business and the community and voluntary sector to improve practices and procedures in relation to women".
