Nuclear Energy is not the answer to global warming fears

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that the British government's determination to press ahead with nuclear energy is a serious mistake, particularly as the track record of the existing British Nuclear facilities is disastrous.
Speaking after British Trade Minster Alistair Darling confirmed British Government plans to push ahead with proposals to build a new generation of nuclear power stations, the South Belfast MLA said,
"Sinn Féin are angry at attempts to exploit genuine concern over greenhouse gas emissions to introduce a new generation of nuclear power stations through the back door.
"The answer to carbon emissions, global warming and the energy crisis is not to turn to the destructive nuclear option. The answer is to invest in, and support the development of sustainable, renewable energy sources such as wave and wind of which Ireland has huge untapped potential.
"The British government's determination to press ahead with nuclear energy is a serious mistake, particularly as the track record of the existing British Nuclear facilities is disastrous.
"How anyone could argue that more nuclear power stations is in the public interest is a mystery because evidence suggests that there are just too many risks and environmental dangers from nuclear energy for it be viable. The fact is that nuclear energy that produces a toxic waste and benefits from huge hidden subsidies. It also undermines the prospects of renewable energy and efforts to increase efficiency." CRÍOCH
