Published: 25 May, 2007

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile, speaking in advance of Friday's Short Strand Safer Neighbourhood Project (SNP) rally against drug dealing in the area, has commended the ongoing work of those involved in the SNP in the area and has said that local people are fed up with the level or drug abuse and dealing which is going on.

Mr Ó Donnghaile said,

"There has been a worrying increase in the both the use and supply of drugs in the Short Strand area. Particularly worrying is the use and availability of hard drugs in the community, with cases of children as young as 15 using cocaine.

"The people of this area are fed up with this anti-social activity, and I would commend the ongoing work of the SNP in working to tackle the issue. The reality is that the best people to deal with this issue is the local community.

"Friday's rally is about the local community sending a message to those who are involved in drug dealing in this area that they must cease their activities, that such activity will not be tolerated in this community".
