South and East Belfast Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Peter Weir disingenuous with RPA remarks

Published: 4 September, 2007

Responding to a statement by the DUP's Peter Weir MLA on the review of public administration (RPA), Sinn Féin local government spokesperson Alex Maskey MLA said The importance of the RPA is not the number of councils but ensuring equality.

Mr Maskey said:

"Peter Weir knows that the review of public administration centres not only around the numbers of councils but also around the functions and delivery available for local communities.

"Any notion of proposed discrimination of any section of the community is utter nonsense. The days of gerrymandering boundaries to suppress anyone are over.

"The key issue must be governance and equality and the RPA has the potential to deliver. The reality is that for years Unionists dominated councils to the detriment of nationalists and now we have the chance to remedy this." CRÍOCH
