South and East Belfast Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

EQUALITY FOR THE IRISH LANGUAGE

Published: 21 September, 2007

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has said that Sinn Féin's submission to the BBC regarding the Irish language outlines the need for parity for the language.

Speaking about the Party's submission to the BBC consultation Niall Ó Donnghaile said,

"Sinn Féin are in agreement with POBAL, the Irish language umbrella group, that there must be equality for the Irish language and the BBC have certain responsibilities on this matter.

"The Irish language is thriving and open to all, with over 65 Irish language schools in the six counties and with almost 4000 children attending. The rights of these children and all Irish speakers must be protected by the BBC.

"In comparison to Scots Gaelic and Welsh in their respective countries there is not enough Irish language provision by this outlet.

"As a public service provider the BBC must listen to the public themselves!"
