Maskey To Chair Belfast Sinn Féin Conference

Published: 2 November, 2007

Alex Maskey MLA is to chair the first Belfast Sinn Féin conference for activists in the city.

This is the first conference of its kind in Belfast and is designed to give activists a greater role in the development of the Party in the city.

Speaking ahead of the conference, due to take place this Sunday in St Kevins Hall, north Belfast, Alex Maskey said:

" I am delighted to have been asked to chair this event. It is indeed an historic first in the city. Belfast has a strong republican history of which all of us can be proud. From the time when the United Irishmen proclaimed the Republic from McArts Fort on Cavehill to the present day, Belfast Republicans have been to the forefront of the struggle for Irish freedom.

This conference is being held at a time when republicanism in Belfast is at its strongest. Our elected representation has increased greatly over the past while. The idea of the conference is for activists to have a greater role in using that increased political strength for the benefit of all the people in this city and for the overall struggle.

I am looking forward for a good day of discussion and debate amongst Belfast republican activists."
