Road Service to investigate Road Safety at Newry-Omeath crash site

Published: 22 November, 2007

South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed the announcement that Road Services is to investigate road safety along the Newry-Omeath Road following the recent accident involving a South Belfast family.

Mr Maskey said:

"While it is disappointing that it appears that a cost in excess of £2 million and further technical difficulties would prevent a scheme to provide a barrier along the 7km stretch of the Newry to Omeath Road, I welcomed the fact that Roads Service will now investigate the road.

"People will remember that only recently a car careered off the road into the canal and left a young baby from South Belfast fighting for its life.

"It is essential to ensure that we now determine what safety actions might be taken to ensure as far as practically possible that this would not happen again.

"Sinn Féin have, for example, asked Roads Service to ensure that all road markings and appropriate signage needed to reduce as much as possible the chance of accidents are in place." ENDS
