South and East Belfast Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

"Mountpottinger must GO!"

Published: 10 April, 2008

Speaking after the news that a number of PSNI stations are to close in County Fermanagh, Sinn Fein's East Belfast representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has once again called for the immediate closure and dismantling of Mountpottinger Barracks in the Short Strand.

"There is no viable reason for this military fortification to be maintained in the heart of our community, a community crying out for more social homes."

"I would call on the PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde and the Policing Board to act at once to remove this unwanted base from the area."

"Mountpottinger is a symbol of all that was wrong with policing in the North of Ireland and it would go some way in showing this community that the PSNI are serious about getting policing right if this symbol of collusion, intimidation and murder was removed sooner rather than later."
